CONFERENCE 2010 INFORMATION

The Institute's 2010 Conference was held at the Law Society in Blackhall Place, Dublin 7 on the 10th September 2010.   It proved to be the Institutes most successful Conference ever with over 150 delegates attending.

We hope conference will be well attended.

It will provide CPD points and hours for both Solicitors and Accountants. The CPD certificates will be sent out after the conference to those who do not obtain them on the day..

The speakers were:

Colin Taylor  Risk Management in Solicitors offices. Prime Risk Solutions.
Prime LogoColin TaylorColin’s career began as a design engineer and a quality assurance engineer within the Rank Organisation.  Colin joined specialist PI brokers Nelson Hurst and Marsh in 1991 and has been account manager and risk management adviser to many of the largest solicitors’ practices in the UK. As well as a detailed knowledge of PI insurance, Colin has an extensive knowledge of operational quality assurance and is a Lexcel consultant. He has lectured widely on risk management for professionals including risk education programmes for solicitors, surveyors, accountants and insurance brokers. He was lead speaker on the Law Society of England and Wales’ seminar programme on preparing for renewal of your PI and Risk management issues. Colin has recently been published in FD Legal, Managing Partner, The Lawyer and Lexcel Link.   Colin gave two presentations.  His  first presentation is here and his second is herePrime profession's website is here.

Colin received many queries from delegates after his two excellent and entertaining presentations. As a result of this feedback Colin is offering his services to help our members with their PI renewal process. The following is an extract from Colin's letter:

Mick O’ReganBusiness Continuity Management. ABC Solutions.
Mick O'ReganMick O’Regan of ABC Solutions is a business continuity specialist with many years experience assisting companies prepare ABC Logocontingency plans. Mick’s expertise incorporates contingency planning, incident management, operational risk analysis, plan exercises/testing, post-incident reviews, reviewing plans etc. Absolute Business Continuity Solutions provides a full Business Continuity Management (BCM) service covering all stages of the lifecycle.  Mcik spoke of how they can assist with defining the continuity requirement, which feeds into looking at relevant recovery strategies.  Once these have been agreed, Mick showed how a business continuity plan can be documented.  Finally he told us of the importance of the ongoing maintenance of the plan as ones business grows and develops.

John Poole  Money Laundering Garda Bureau of Fraud Investigation.
Garda LogoJohn Poole (who replaced our advertised speaker Maureen McGrath who was unavailable due to pressure of work) is a Detective Sergeant in the Money-Laundering Investigation Unit, within the Garda Bureau of Fraud Investigation at Harcourt Square in Dublin 2.  He has been attached to the Garda Money Laundering Investigation Unit since 1996 both as a Detective Garda and Detective Sergeant and is currently in charge of one of the two investigation teams attached to the Unit. He specialises in the area of terrorist financing and EU/UN Sanctions and all enquiries emanating from same. In his presentation, John outlined what you need to have in place in your office from the Garda's point of view.  He also explained the new act and its implications for Solicitors.  His presentation is here.
